It is also worrying for all of us because of the concept of copy cat riots springing up in other major European cities due to other ethnic and financial concerns caused by the economic downturn. Confirmed sources have told us that last week following the UK riots seven highly ranked Doctors and Professors of Psychology from top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge were covertly and without any fuss dismissed from a major government research project which has been looking into the social conditions that will cause severe civil disorder in young people in the UK. But why suppress what appears to be such relevant research – ???, this would appear to be the exactly the type of research that is badly needed in the aftermath of the riots. So what new unequivocally proved evidence was really controversial enough to be so abruptly closed down and gagged overnight by a major world government – ???. Whilst at the same time being taught through channels like MTV-Base that you should aspire to fully engage in all ways with our society’s mega consumerism and treat with disdain or even violence anyone who is standing in the way of them achieving this. Add to this black rap’s highly disrespectful overtly sexual/sexist behavior towards girls and women and according to this research you have a highly volatile molotov cocktail of social unrest just waiting to be ignited by the slightest spark and low and behold it did. When it is put like that no wonder the UK Government have taken action to suppress this research. But is it truly the right thing at this highly worrying time ??? Well according to the research the problems are now so embedded that England simply does not have the funds or time to put it right, the only way now is for the root causes to be cut out even if this may cause further civil unrest. Basically it is far too late for the softly, softly catchee monkey approach and the only option now left is to face up to and make public the true reasons no matter what the ramifications. Well the ball is now firmly in the court of the UK’s Government and boy, I would not like to be in their shoes, especially with the Notting-Hill {Riots}, oops sorry Carnival imminent, taking place near the end of this month. Let’s hope for them that does not kick it off yet again, because if it does that will be the final nail in the coffin this time and the youth of London will finally have destroyed their final mandate and many of their rights. Good luck old chaps, perhaps now the totally none violent or discriminate, anti-consumerism message of our electronica will finally be truly appreciated. Komori out, Ben. N.B. are thanks go out to all those that have risked being personally discredited to get this story out to us, now pass this on truth can finally out.“LONDON-CALLING”, this was, “LONDON-CALLING”
MAJOR EXPOSE ALERT:
Greetings , It has now been nearly a week since the appalling riots in the UK came to an end. This is a worrying time for all and particularly those who like myself have many dear friends in London and it goes without saying Carnivale Group’s thoughts, sympathies and emotions go out to all those affected by these horrific events.
Until now, mainly because we are generally a music focused site, we have chosen not to comment on the riots. However on Friday we were handed a major music based scoop as regards the UK’s riots and since many of the concerned academics have now been gagged in case it causes more major civil unrest, I feel that it is now our social duty to report the real facts to you.
I often feel that I am like the Rorschach character in the Watchmen graphic novels, in that I don’t believe in compromise in any form, especially as regards scientific facts and evidence and that for better or worse the general public should always be allowed access to all information and findings without government censorship. So here at Carnivale we will stand by our guns and publish and be damned about this short but highly controversial story.
Well the answer is actually quite simple, the research showed that the greatest cause of any civil unrest amongst the demographic of young people was the hyper promotion of ultra consumerism in the media with the main isolated culprit being black rap music. Basically the overt self promotion of status by possessions rather than self-worth has created generations that are now taught through black rap music that you should aspire to wealth, possessions and fame without work and that state handouts are a right not a privilege. These Generations now believe they should not have to do any jobs they feel are demeaning or mundane.
For better or for worse, the same research is also currently being repeated in the US with exactly the same findings being proven. So the real question is now, how do you actually stop this hyper promotion of consumerism in black rap music without infringing on freedom of the press or even the basic principles of freedom of speech??
Description
Releasing this podcast took a bit longer than expected because we made a little screw up due to holiday issues with regard to our site management… Nevertheless, this fresh podcast from Carnivale artist Koen Lebens, who is responsible for our last well received EP, proves to be timeless. Enjoy listening, it will definitely get you in a party mind set!
So here we go. Let’s go back to Tuesday the 28th of June. Google released its newest tool, a social networking service named Google+, via an invitation-only testing phase. Paul Allen, the ancestry.com founder, has been analyzing the raw data of Google+ over the past two weeks and stated that it’s very likely that Google+ will reach 10 million users by Today. He even went further by saying that Google+ will probably surpass the 20 million users milestone over the weekend (under the condition that users are allowed to use the invite button without restrictions). Such a rapid growth of users in such a short amount of time is unheard of. To give you an idea: it took Facebook nearly 3 years (2004-2006) until they passed the holy amount of 10 million accounts. However, we need to see things a bit in perspective as well. Contrary to Google+, Facebook was actually implementing a revolutionary platform that would change our general view on the capabilities of social media forever. What’s scary though, is the fact that we have only seen the beginning of what’s actually currently happening. For instance, when taking a quick look at Google+, one notices that the design is very basic (see picture below – click on it to enlarge). This is in fact one of the key successes behind any Google product, it’s both geek chique and n00b proof. Functionality meets simplicity. But when you compare Google+ with Facebook it becomes very hard to imagine that Google+ won’t be able to integrate any current Facebook service into its own service in the nearby future. So where are we now? How does the above given information relate to the Microsoft Skype acquisition mentioned earlier on? Facebook announced last week that it will be introducing Skype video, voice and group chat into its service. Google+ has a similar service, called Hangout. Remember that both Facebook and Google were in the race to buy Skype, before Microsoft eventually landed the 8.5 billion dollar deal? It’s going to be interesting to see who will win this battle. Facebook may have the numbers for now, but Zuckerberg & co. will have to be on top of their game from now on. When Google+ starts to appear to be a better solution the tide can turn very very quickly. Last, but not least, the role of the telecom providers should be taken into account as well. Before the Dutch parliament went into recess earlier this month, there was a vote on net neutrality. The lower house adopted a text banning operators from discriminating their users’ communications, for instance by slowing or blocking specific content or services. It’s expected that the Senate will approve the bill later on this year. Aren’t you a lucky bunny soon when you’re running Google+ on your Android mobile device, while you can’t be charged extra by your Telco provider for using the service??? P.S. if you need a Google+ invite drop your email address in the comment section belowGoogle+ Rules The Waves!

Some of you may recall an article that I wrote two months ago about Microsoft acquiring Skype. I predicted that this acquisition would symbolize the beginning of a new battle. Nearly all the big players, from software giants to telco providers, were at that moment of time either directly or indirectly involved.
Such a radical change in belief simply takes time. Add to that knowledge the financial and technological power of Google (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, Youtube, Picasa, Android etc.) and it becomes blatantly clear why Google was actually capable of pulling this one off.
So why did Google pull out? According to my source Google decided to walk out of the negotiations because the back-end technology of Skype was too outdated (peer-to-peer) to make a valuable step forward with Google+. In other words: it made more sense for Google to increase their own R&D budget on Google Voice & Talk instead of paying $ 8.5 billion for outdated technology. I have been testing Google+ Hangout over the past couple of days and it seems to be working fine. Do bare in mind that it’s in developmental phase, so it’s hard to say how good it will actually work when 25 million users start using it simultaneously at the same time.
On the other hand, Facebook’s choice for Skype is a no-brainer. They have been working together extensively for quite some time. Although Facebook did not land the deal, one should not forget that Facebook is partially owned by Microsoft as well. Then when you take a look at how underdeveloped Facebook’s current chat functionality is, the choice for Skype suddenly makes a lot of sense.
Patience is a virtue… Komori Out, Ben.
When the summer is at its hottest, the beach is at its best. Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Carnivale will escape to beachclub FUEL in Bloemendaal on Sunday the 17th of July for a wonderful summer edition. The concept is simple, as it should be on a warm Sunday afternoon. 10 hours, 10 acts and for the rest: just relax, party and enjoy the summer weather. First of all, Carnivale has the great honor to invite Bulgaria’sLiubo Ursiny to FUEL. This resident of Elevate and the famous Yalta Club in Sofia has remained relatively unknown in the Netherlands so far, but that is gradually changing. Liubo is known for his deep techno and a set build up that is equally brilliant as thoughtful. In short, the time has come to introduce him to the Carnivale crowd! Also from Bulgaria comes Tony Boogs, another Elevate resident who’ll take his place behind the decks together with Carnivale resident Rik Woldring. Although Tony Boogs is a Dutchman, he’s lived across the border long enough to be labeled as a true Bohemian or citizen of the world. And his music has developed along similar lines, difficult to label and at its place everywhere. Especially at the beach. In addition to these foreign heroes various Dutch titans have also been invited to bring musical refreshment to the beach. Men who have been around in the local scene for years, such as Terry Toner and Philip Young; but also a couple of youngsters, like Camiel Daamen and Tim & Ties. And Carnivale’s beachteam is completed with various trustworthy residents. Specker, Mind 01, Ben Komor and Maketoire & Pennypacker will provide the remaining carnivalesque and beat thumping support for this memorable day. To sum up: Sunday, July 17: ten hours sun, ten hours beats, ten hours on the beach with Carnivale. What else does one need? Exactly! See you the 17th, see you in FUEL!

Please forgive us for being off the radar for quite some time. Not looking for any excuses, but we are very happy to be back. This week’s podcast is delivered by The Popes. It’s a live recording of their closing set during Carnivale’s 3 year anniversary last Friday in AIR. Be prepared for proper dance floor mayhem, it will definitely get you in the right mind set for our stage at Amsterdam Open AIR festival tomorrow!
Electronic Groove is back in the game and released both a Dan Curtin and tINI podcast. Al Kent is in control of DJ Broadcast’s podcast and Death On The Balcony is in charge of Ibiza Voice’s blessing. Looks like Sound Wall is having a holiday break this week. Electronic Groove 200: Dan Curtin DJ Broadcast 155: Al Kent Ibiza Voice: Death On The Balcony Electronic Groove 201: tINI Last week I tipped Sascha Dive’s Sound Wall podcast as my personal number one. Quite funny to see that tINI ends this week’s EG podcast with the track Sascha began with: Drums Of The Jungle. Coincidence? Who knows, but unfortunately she didn’t go down the same road as Sascha. Miss Desolat starts of very slowly and gives everybody a chance to get into the mix. But the problem is that the set never really lifts off to a higher level. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool set to play on the background, but I don’t think it’s gonna make it into the history books. I have heard tINI play many times and she can simply do better than this. Resident Advisor 261: LV
The first time I heard Dan play was about 4 years ago in Club 11 during a Static night. At that moment of time I didn’t really know what I could expect of him; but this podcast perfectly reflects his unchanged style: a subtle crossover of house and techno. The mix starts of quite relaxed, but in less than 10 minutes you get sucked into a techno groove that keeps a firm grip over you throughout the rest of the set. However, the beauty (read: the success behind Dan’s sound) is that he occasionally drops an unexpected house track that gives the set just that little bit of extra depth. Must listen for those who like to be surprised and are in a summer mood!
Thank god for DJ Broadcast, because with this podcast they do what they do best. I have to admit that I never heard of Al Kent, but after listening to this mix I simply want to hear more, more and more! Disco, funk, groove, soul; you name it… Al Kent blends it all together in a fresh cocktail that will even turn the most pessimistic people out there into true optimists. Make sure you have this set by hand whenever you plan to sit outside on a balcony or roof terrace on a warm summer day!
It doesn’t surprise me at all that these boys are from Leeds. Although London is still seen as the musical capitol of the UK, Leeds should definitely not be underestimated. Personally I consider the DOTB remix of Dexter Kane’s “Feel Music” to be one of their best tracks. It’s dark, groovy and freaky. Style wise they fit best somewhere in the region between Visionquest and Hot Natured. With this podcast they clearly chose to stick with their easygoing guns and left the freakiness for what it is. Nevertheless it’s still well worth listening.
Ok. Let’s do some name dropping: bla bla bla UK bass bla bla bla bla. Done. Sorry boys, this interpretation of UK bass is simply not my cup of tea. There are definitely some cool tracks in this mix, but it’s way too hectic. Guess that’s what you get most of the time when you try to stick 36 tracks in only 50 minutes of air time.
We’ve got some nice podcasts lined up for you in this week’s review. Make sure you check out Sascha Dive on Sound Wall and Resident Advisor’s Matthew Burton & Kate Rathod. For some reason Electronic Groove is having a sabbatical (nearly a month already!), not sure what’s going on over there. Fingers crossed, let’s hope they’ll be back soon! Sound Wall 47: Sascha Dive Resident Advisor 260: Matthew Burton & Kate Rathod DJ Broadcast 154: Morphosis Ibiza Voice: Agaric
If clinical and deep would form two extremes on a spectrum, there would be no doubt whatsoever on where Sascha Dive would reside. After listening for two minutes to this podcast it becomes very clear that Dive’s roots lie in Frankfurt and Ricardo Villalobos is one of his main influences when it comes down to mixing. Deep sub-basses, freaky vocals and twisted percussions are seemingly interconnected throughout this set. As a result the mix sounds so full and complete. But also very unpredictable, without knowing the listener gets sucked into the realms of the unknown. It’s a must hear for those who love to explore the deeper sounds of life.
With a joint EP coming out soon on Visionquest it’s hard to deny that the future isn’t looking bright for Matthew Burton and Kate Rathod. The podcast was recorded live through Cubase and an Akai MPC 500. Furthermore, both artists also added live vocals to the mix, which gives the set a nice extra touch. Overall the podcast sounds quite mellow, since it’s not dance floor oriented. Slightly experimental as well, but definitely not too experimental. Matthew and Kate show that they are true masters of the deep. But dont’ be fooled: those who expect a 1 hour flirt with darkness will be somewhat disappointed. Instead this mix tends to move toward the brighter side. It’s a great set to start your day with. Especially the subtle and happy melodies, in combination with Kate’s hypnotic vocals are a blessing for the ears.
Fasten your seat belts, Morphosis is about to take you on a 45 minute journey through space. The podcast starts with a screaming crowd, which gives a subtle hint of how the mix was recorded (live in St. Petersburg, Russa). Rabif Beani, better known as Morphosis, uses various instruments during his live-act, such as a Roland TR808, Acidlab Bassline, Korg Mono/Poly and a Space Echo pedal. By doing so he creates a unique experimental sound, which would definitely fit in sci-fi movies such as “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It’s forward thinking music to say the least, ultimately making it difficult to listen to. But in a scene where everything starts to sound more and more similar, I consider Morphosis as a relief. Click here for the rest of the interview DJ Broadcast did with him.
Although Patrick Skoog has been around for decades, being responsible for more than 100 vinyl releases, mainly during the harder techno era; his Agaric project remained relatively unknown for a while. But the massive hit ‘Who Made Up The Rules’, which came out on Ovum earlier on this year, definitely changed that. Unfortunately this week’s podcast of Ibiza Voice misses the progressiveness that Agaric established in the studio. Don’t get me wrong, because it’s not a mix that will get on your nerves at all… However, it just largely lacks in distinguishability. A trend that’s been going on for quite some time at the Ibiza Voice podcast department.
In September 2010 my debut novel Ego Faber came out at Ambo-Anthos Publishers. It’s a story about friendship and love, set against the background of Amsterdam in the 2000s. The book is my take on Generation Y – the fast living twenty-somethings that witnessed 9/11 on television, experienced their fair share of sex, drugs and rock ’n roll and created Facebook in the meantime. Written from the perspective of a young nameless protagonist who becomes close friends with Amsterdam hipsters Ego Faber and Rein Somers the book tries to capture the mood, the atmosphere and the spirit of the youth at the beginning of the millennium. Fuelled with some hubris, narcotics and a longing for adventure the three university students visit clubs, concerts and fashion shows, while Dutch society is confronted with the political murders of Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh. This hedonistic life style slowly changes when the protagonist falls hopelessly in love with the mysterious Zara, who eventually becomes the girlfriend of Ego Faber. From that point on even visits to Berlin, London or Lowlands can’t prevent the disintegration of their friendship and even worse. Music plays an important role in the book – starting with the motto quoting a song from The Libertines, but especially in the numerous scenes filled with music of acts like Daft Punk, The Strokes and Justice, but also of older artists like The Kinks, Iggy Pop, The Smiths, Duran Duran and The Cure. During the writing process my iPod kept me writing, channelling my imagination and directing the rhythm of my sentences. In the months after publication the novel was received quite well and got a second printing at the beginning of 2011. Time will tell of course if Ego Faber becomes the portrait of a generation that I intended it to be, but for now I hope you are curious enough to read it, so you can judge for yourself… Deal with it – rock and roll! Stewart said at the Hackers’ Conference of 1984 to Apple founder Steve Wozniak: “Information wants to be free”. As well all know now, the man was right; information is free these days. Though countless critics still point out the disadvantages for society and economy, the open source evangelists, like us proud people at Carnivale, can only applaud this development. More and more there is prove that if something is shared and distributed for free, that doesn’t have to mean there’s no money to be made. While many haters still frown on illegal downloading and piracy, many artists have benefited from putting their record up for grabs, warming the public up to their new work, and eventually seeing their sales go through the roof. As Martin Atkins said at the kick off the SXSW festival this March: “It’s not a problem if 20.000 people illegally download your music. It’s a problem if they don’t.” But although we have seen many albums or movies go viral across the world in a matter of days, a new example – and what great one it is – has now popped up: the viral book pdf. Recently, a children’s book, which publication date is set for 14 June, has topped the Amazon Bestseller chart. It’s charming title – and without a doubt the biggest reason for its success – is: “Go The Fuck To Sleep”. The title being the obvious reason for people to share it, a pdf of the book went out to booksellers who supposedly leaked it to just about everyone. The buzz for the book became so intense that people all over started to pre-order the book that hadn’t even been published yet. Somehow there’s a perfect combination of factors for the sudden success of this “children’s book for adults”, as author Adam Mansbach now calls it. A splendid report by The Bay Citizen explains: “This volume had a few key properties that enabled its electronic popularity: an undeniable title, a good-looking cover and a short length, making it easy to read, post and pass on. Also, the long lag time between the book’s pre-sale (it was originally scheduled to go on sale in October) and the buzz made online sharing necessary.” Off course the publisher Akashic Books, says it has done everything in its power to stop the copying and sharing of the book. At the same time, they must be ecstatic. Without one cent going to any planned marketing campaign their book has readers flocking to Amazon. Already called “the perfect gift at baby showers”, this book will soon lie on every parents(-to-be) bed stand. As Ibrahim Ahmad, senior of Akashic Books, states to the Bay Citizen: “this book really tapped onto a nerve”. This rather gruesome sentiment of parents wanting to foul mouth to their children has been lurking in the distance for a quite a while now. The book charmed so many people that: “Up until this week,” Ahmad said, “we have done nothing to promote this book.” It all began almost a year ago when after a particularly tiresome bedtime session with his daughter Adam Mansbach posted on his Facebook: “Look out for my forthcoming children’s book, ‘Go the fuck to Sleep’.” Mansbach received so much digital appraisal from his friends he decided to actually write the book. And contrary to Sheridan Simove’s 300 blank paged book What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex, which was covered in a earlier post, he didn’t just make a gimmick out of it. He hired a befriended illustrator, Ricarco Cortés, wrote a story and did his best to make something of it. Here’s an excerpt: The cats nestle close to their kittens now. As this example points out once again: content is king and piracy is always better than obscurity. Over and out, Haro.

The lambs have laid down with the sheep.
You’re cozy and warm in your bed, my dear
Please go the fuck to sleep.
